File:  IHAAA - SUMMER READING PROGRAMS

The experience of independent reading outside of the classroom is valuable and contributes toward the formation of a lifelong reading habit. While this outside reading should take place during the school year as an outgrowth of classroom objectives, the School Committee believes that a consistently implemented and expanded approach to reading by students during the summer vacation can create positive educational outcomes for all students.

In the development of a summer reading program, consideration should be given to the following:

1. Reading lists at each level should have the input of all departments and not be limited only to the English/Language Arts area.

2. Reading lists should be updated annually to reflect new books, staff and students interests, and changing curriculum needs.

3. The quality of the reading program should take precedence over quantity.

4. The program should be flexible, taking into account vacation and work schedules of the students during the summer.

5. For accountability purposes, the program should have some formal or informal follow-up, recognition or celebration when the students return to school in the fall.

6. Linkage should be established with the local library department.

7. In all cases, the program should stress the positive aspects and outcomes of reading.
